Dental Insurance
At Kinston Smiles, we accept most insurance providers, as well as health savings account (HSA) and flex spending account (FSA) plans.
We will file all necessary claims and paperwork with your insurance provider. We will provide you with an explanation of your dental benefits prior to dental treatment.
Our staff is very knowledgeable and experienced in handling insurance matters and will be happy to answer any questions you have about your coverage.

Routine Exams
We provide emergency and comprehensive exams. We conduct oral cancer screenings, x-rays, periodontal screening, a test of jaw issues and bite problems, or tooth-specific exams. These tests help the dentist identify the seriousness of a patient’s dental condition, and determine the best personalized treatment.
Dental Hygiene
Preventive Care refers to adopting certain practices to keep one’s teeth healthy. The aim of preventive dentistry is to avoid gum disease, enamel wear, cavities, and other preventable dental conditions. The main forms of this type of dentistry include dental cleanings, flossing, and daily brushing.

OUR PROVIDERS
Dr. Mertely obtained her Bachelor’s of Science degree at the University of Central Florida in Biomedical Sciences. She graduated from the University of Maryland with her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. She was then selected to complete a multi-disciplinary residency at East Carolina University. The residency provided her with advanced training in all dentistry specialties, including oral surgery, pediatrics, anesthesia, endodontics, prosthodontics and esthetic dentistry. Raised in Florida, Dr. Mertely and her husband Tyler relocated to Eastern North Carolina where she has been practicing dentistry in a private practice setting.
Dr. Mertely participates regularly in comprehensive dentistry education courses, to maintain progressive skills in general dentistry. She feels that it is important to stay up-to-date with current and evolving techniques and materials, to provide state-of-the-art, research-based treatment for patients.
Outside of the office, Dr. Mertely enjoys spending time with her husband and two dogs, traveling, staying active and working on her golf game. Dr. Mertely comes from a Hispanic background and is conversational in Spanish. She enjoys giving back to her community and treating her patients as family.
Dr. Fuqua was born and raised in a small southern town in the Florida panhandle. Her Southern roots ground her as kind-hearted, compassionate and dedicated to serve her community. She strives to provide the highest standard of care while building friendly relationships.
She received her bachelor’s of science degree in Microbiology and Cell Science from the University of Florida. She decided to return to her Alma Mater and continue her education where she received her Doctor of Dental Medicine. During her last year of dental school, Dr. Fuqua was awarded as the Florida Dental Student of the Year by the Florida Dental Association.
Dr. Fuqua practices general dentistry and enjoys providing comprehensive care for her patients. She is passionate about educating her patients on oral health enhancing their smiles through her skills in art and science. Dr. Fuqua is certified in administering Botox for therapeutic treatment such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction.
She is a lover of the outdoors and likes to explore North Carolina with her golden retriever, Aspen. In her free time she enjoys to travel, experience new cuisines and make jewelry.
